Povidone iodine is used to prevent and treat skin infections in wounds such as burns and cuts.
This medicine is also used to disinfect the skin before surgery.
Apply Povidone iodine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not apply more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Try to apply it at the same time each day.
Povidone iodine is available in various preparations such as powder spray, solution, ointment or gel.
If you are using the solution, ointment or gel, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry affected area before application.
- Apply the medicine gently on the skin. The treated area may be covered as necessary.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube or bottle.
If you are using the powder spray, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Shake the bottle well.
- Spray the affected area from a distance of 6-10 inches until a dusting powder is deposited. The treated area may be covered as necessary.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the bottle.
Avoid contact with eyes. Rinse immediately with water if this medicine gets into your eyes. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.
You may stop applying this medicine once your wound is healed. Do not use Povidone iodine for longer than 1 week.
Apply Povidone iodine as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have or have had thyroid problems.
Do not apply Povidone iodine in serious wounds such as severe burns, animal bites or large or deep puncture wounds.
Do not give Povidone iodine to children below 2 years old.
DO NOT use this medicine with lithium (medicine for mood disorder).
Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Povidone iodine may interfere with thyroid function tests. Inform your doctor if you need to undergo a thyroid function test while using this medicine.
Povidone iodine may cause any of the following side effects: skin irritation, itching, rash and swelling.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not use this medicine with lithium (medicine for mood disorder).
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
